Businesses on track for train manufacturing

Queensland businesses recently heard how they could be part of the largest rail project in the Queensland’s history.

Supply chain opportunities linked to the Queensland Government’s $7.1 billion Queensland Train Manufacturing Program were showcased to more than 350 guests attending an in-person and online supply chain event hosted in Maryborough this week. Queensland business representatives attending the event heard directly from three shortlisted train manufacturers: Alstom, CAF and Downer Rail.

The program will significantly increase the capacity of Queensland’s train fleet through the staged pipeline of train building work undertaken in Maryborough over the next 10 years. Two new maintenance depots and additional stabling yards will also be built in the Gold Coast region.

The multi-billion investment in the historic manufacturing and infrastructure project is expected to create more than 1000 jobs through train and infrastructure construction, and the provision of goods and services to Central Queensland and local suppliers across a range of capabilities.

The Fraser Coast will be the focal point of the historic program, with 65 trains to be built at a new train manufacturing facility at Torbanlea, north of Maryborough. The facility will provide employment and supply chain opportunities locally, as well as for manufacturers, suppliers and businesses across the state.

For the first time in years, Queensland trains will be built by Queenslanders, for Queenslanders. The program will see the Wide Bay region boom, bringing economic benefits to not only the region, but to Queensland.
