The Greater Whitsunday region covers 90,354 square km. Comprising of the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday local government areas, the Greater Whitsunday Region is encompassed by St Lawrence in the south, Gumlu in the north to Clermont in the west and the Great Barrier Reef Whitsunday’s group of 74 islands to the east.

Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro
The commencement of a detailed design and cost analysis for a potential 5-gigawatt pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) facility in the western Pioneer Valley, approximately 75 kilometers west of Mackay.
This new large-scale PHES asset will allow renewable energy to be stored and dispatched at times when the renewable resources are unable to meet demand.

The Mackay Base Hospital Expansion will deliver an additional 128 beds to support healthcare for the region, including new beds for paediatric, medical and surgical patients. It will deliver more acute, sub-acute, women’s, children’s and neonatal services closer to home.
It also includes a new multi-storey cark park with more than 1,000 spaces to support the expansion and improvements to the Mackay Hospital site.

Mackay Port Access Road
Mackay Port Access will provide a direct link for freight movements from the Mackay Port to the Mackay Ring Road, and west to the Bowen Basin coal fields via the Walkerston Bypass and Peak Downs Highway.
