Roma Street transformation takes shape ahead of Olympics
Brisbane’s Roma Street precinct is set to become Queensland’s chief transport hub, offering easy access to a key Olympics venue, new housing, and expanded park lands.
The hub will centre around a new underground train station being built for Cross River Rail. The connecting bus services will create the state’s busiest public transport interchange.
Just to the North, new residential buildings will also be added, along with more than two hectares of new publicly accessible open space. These additions will provide greater long-term access to the parklands for the community, meaning more people will be able to enjoy this amazing location.
Brisbane is now an ‘Olympic City’. Hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games means a 10-year pipeline of construction jobs, trade and investment opportunities, as well as legacy projects that will benefit Queenslanders for decades to come.
The new Roma Street station and precinct is set to be an integral part of the Games itself, with new cycling and pedestrian paths being built throughout. These paths will connect to a new indoor arena built to host events for the 2032 Games. A second arena is also proposed, likely to host swimming and water polo events.
Work is already well underway on new Roma Street station, with the huge underground cavern almost fully excavated. More than 130 workers have been involved in this part of the job. This progress shows how Brisbane is already getting ready for the Olympics.
