Unlocking Queensland's Future Potential

Unlocking Queensland's Future Potential

Queensland is growing. Across the state, our regions and communities are expanding and so are their needs for efficient, well-maintained infrastructure. Over the next decade, infrastructure will be delivered to maximise the opportunities from expected population growth, the transition towards a renewable energy grid and securing the greatest post-2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games outcomes for Queenslanders.

What is Big Build and what does it mean for Queenslanders?

In the coming 10 years, our state will become home to over a million new Queenslanders. This means we need to work now to ensure we have not just more homes that suit different needs, but more services like hospitals, schools and public transport so our communities grow in the right way – and stay great places to live, work and play.

In 2022, the Queensland Government released the State Infrastructure Strategy (SIS) – a 20-year plan setting out a vision for the state’s infrastructure needs with focus areas including becoming a renewable energy superpower, building a Brisbane 2032 legacy, connecting the regions, creating liveable communities and driving infrastructure performance.

As such, we are embarking on the biggest decade of infrastructure delivery in our state’s history.  The Queensland Government is investing in the Big Build capital works program to deliver a variety of infrastructure upgrades, including hospitals, schools, roads, rail, parks and precincts, sports facilities and infrastructure to support the renewable energy transition.

There will be impacts from construction of this scale, but these are short-term inconveniences that will deliver long-term benefits for all. Queensland’s Big Build will generate jobs, improve services, protect our enviable lifestyle, grow economic investment, boost our regions and help secure a bright future for our kids.

Generating jobs now and for the future

One of the most significant benefits of the development of infrastructure projects is the creation of diverse employment opportunities and stimulation of the local economy. Including jobs for construction workers, engineers, architects and other professionals who find work in these projects, injecting money into the community and supporting local businesses and boosting local supply chains.

When complete, new hospitals provide career pathways for medical professionals, upgraded schools attract teachers and renewable energy facilities provide ongoing employment in a range of sectors. These sectors not only offer jobs but also attract talent to all our regions, fostering a vibrant economic ecosystem.

Improving public services in our regions

Improved public services offer benefits for all members of the community. Access to world-class hospitals and medical care, upgraded school and sporting facilities, new roads and rail services and activated green spaces all make living in regional areas easier and convenient for residents and helps to attract new people to live in our regions.

Creating a brighter future for our kids

Creating liveable regions and communities attracts and encourages more people to make their tree or sea change and a move into regional areas easier.  Futureproofing the regions with world-class hospitals, upgraded schools, transport infrastructure and facilities means people are likely to stay long-term, have families and retain future generations.

Attracting economic investment

Infrastructure investment in our regions lays the foundation for economic growth. Upgrading transport networks, enhancing public amenities and developing modern facilities attracts businesses and investors. This creates a ripple effect that boosts the local economy and creates jobs.

How is Big Build unlocking Queensland’s future potential?

Townsville University Hospital

The Townsville region is predicted to grow more than 30 per cent over the next 20 years. With thousands more expected to call the region home in the next decades, demand for health services will continue. A major expansion of Townsville University Hospital will build a new multi-storey clinical building and deliver a bigger and better hospital with more health services to cater to the growing community. During construction, a total of 1454 jobs will be generated, delivering a new clinical services building that will house an additional 143 overnight beds.

Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline

The 117-kilometre Fitzroy to Gladstone pipeline will improve water security for Gladstone’s communities and industries and provide future growth and development opportunities for the region’s emerging clean energy industry, including hydrogen. The pipeline project includes a water treatment plant, reservoirs and pumping stations.

The project will not only provide water security and reliability to the region but will create more than 400 jobs at the peak of construction, 25 apprenticeships and traineeships and support the growth of Queensland’s renewables sector.

Gold Coast Light Rail Extension

This critical infrastructure will support the Gold Coast and its continued growth over the next two decades. The project will connect communities with business and jobs, hospitals and medical facilities, education, shopping, dining, entertainment and sporting centres.

Stage three is delivering a 6.7km extension south of the existing tram network to link Broadbeach South and Burleigh Heads. It features eight new stations, five additional trams and will reduce peak hour congestion and travel time for commuters.

Each region has its own plan to support the State Infrastructure Strategy and help prioritise regionally significant infrastructure needs. This place-based approach aligns infrastructure planning and investment with the unique priorities and future needs of each region.

Our great state is changing for the better and our future is bright because we are seizing the opportunities that growth provides.
