Planning ahead: How regional plans support thriving Queensland communities, and how you can be involved in shaping yours

  • planning

Queensland’s regional plans play an important role in shaping the places where Queenslanders live, work and play. These long-term plans set out a shared vision for managing growth across our state’s diverse regions, from dense urban areas to remote and regional areas.

The scope of regional plans focusses on addressing the priorities which matter most for communities, unlocking the supply of new homes and jobs. Regional plans also give certainty to councils, businesses and investors, helping facilitate economic opportunities.

Every part of Queensland has its own regional plan

There are 13 regional plans currently in place or in review, covering every part of Queensland. New regional plans are streamlined, incorporating the region’s infrastructure plan with a focus on each region’s strategic priorities.

These reviews are important because significant legislative and policy changes have occurred since many of the existing plans were made. These plans are a great way to deliver consistent land use planning outcomes across Queensland, like the delivery of increased housing supply.

Each region has its own strengths, opportunities and challenges, and its plan is tailored accordingly.

By planning ahead and taking a whole-of-region view, Queensland’s regional plans ensure growth is managed responsibly, so today’s decisions support thriving communities now and for generations to come.

Planning in partnership

Each regional plan is developed in partnership with the relevant local councils, state agencies and other key stakeholders, such as industry representatives. Statutory public consultation is also conducted on draft plans, which is the opportunity for everyone to have their say.
