A new report released 4 April 2025 signals Queensland’s maritime industry is demonstrating strong capability and growth expertise, set to boost the state’s economic future.

The North and Far North Queensland Maritime Industry Supply Chain Report was developed to provide an in-depth analysis of the maritime industry’s capability.

The report identifies 784 unique businesses, including 60 Indigenous businesses, operating within the regions’ maritime support chain, spanning key capability areas such as fabrication, mechanical and electrical services, and marine support.

Developed in collaboration with Industry Capability Network Queensland (ICN QLD), the report responds to calls by NORSTA Cairns and the major shipyards in the Cairns Marine Precinct to drive industry success through highlighting the strength of local businesses.

Executive Regional Director for State Development, Darren Cleland, said the report underscores the strength and expertise of the maritime industry in North and Far North Queensland.

“This report will be a critical tool in shaping future maritime industry opportunities in the state’s north,” Mr Cleland said.

“Leveraging insights like these supports policy development, attracts business to Queensland, and assists shipyards in identifying new local suppliers to strengthen supply chains.

“That will see more strategic partnerships formed, and North and Far North Queensland businesses growing and diversifying within the maritime sector.”

Nimmi Pushparajan, General Manager of ICN QLD (QMI), said the report, which was collated by the ICN QLD team, provides valuable insights into the size, scale, and experience of businesses supporting the maritime sector.

“It’s an important piece of work that showcases the regions as key players in Queensland’s broader industry network,” Ms Pushparajan said.

“We know the report will be used by businesses to highlight their capabilities to potential clients, including defence and commercial operators.”
