From passion to purpose: Louise’s journey at Allweld Manufacturing

In the heart of North Queensland’s cattle country, a quiet transformation is underway.

For Louise, welding is more than just a trade – it’s a passion she’s been honing since her childhood on her family property in Maryborough.

“I’ve always loved working with my hands… I used to tinker with cars, pulling them apart and piecing them back together,” Louise recalls.

Today, as a second-year apprentice at Indigenous-owned Allweld Manufacturing, she’s turning that passion into a meaningful career with purpose and direction.

Louise’s story is one of growth, mentorship, and opportunity – a journey made possible by the supportive team at Allweld, a business deeply rooted in the Fraser Coast community.

From welding small canopies to now tackling larger-than-life projects, Louise is thriving in an environment that nurtures not only technical skills but also personal and professional development.

A legacy of mentorship and growth

Allweld Manufacturing’s story began in 1995, founded by Andrew and Jo Anne Linwood with a team of 20 passionate tradespeople.

Today, under the leadership of Managing Director Josh Linwood – himself a former Allweld apprentice – the company has grown to employ 112 staff across nine facilities, including 42 apprentices.

“Allweld isn’t just about welding,” said Josh. “It’s about teaching our apprentices life skills, leadership, and giving them the tools to succeed in anything they choose to do.

“Watching them grow through the business and into their own lives – buying cars, houses, and becoming leaders – makes me incredibly proud.”

This commitment to fostering talent is at the heart of Allweld’s culture. For Louise, it’s what sets the company apart.

“Everyone here is so willing to teach you everything they know and give you a chance,” she said.

“The atmosphere is amazing – we all work together, and it feels like a big family. I’m keen to see how far I can go with my skills and make the most of everything I’ve got.”

Empowering a new generation of tradespeople

Allweld’s approach to apprenticeships goes beyond technical training.

The company’s dedicated training centre provides aspiring tradespeople – including First Nations youth – with the skills to meet the demands of industries like transport, energy, and defence.

“Every young person deserves the opportunity to learn and grow,” Josh explains.

“We’re passionate about giving them that start, not just in their trade, but in life. It’s about building confidence and creating pathways for their future.”

For Louise, this support has been transformative. “I’ve learned so much already, from understanding quality standards to fine-tuning my welding techniques,” she says.

“It’s exciting to think about where this experience can take me – I’d love to step into leadership roles one day and see just how far I can push myself.”

Rooted in community, driving regional growth

While Allweld’s apprenticeships are changing individual lives, the company’s impact extends far beyond its workshop walls.

By creating local jobs and nurturing home-grown talent, Allweld is helping strengthen the Fraser Coast’s economy and its reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

“It’s important to us that people in this region have the opportunity to build their careers here,” said Josh.

“The community has supported us from the beginning, and we’re committed to giving back – creating opportunities that help the Fraser Coast thrive.”

The Queensland Government has played a role in supporting Allweld’s growth, enabling the business to expand its facilities, take on more apprentices, and secure major contracts in industries like emergency services and defence.

“The Queensland Government has given us the profile and resources to aim higher and continue building a future for our team and our community,” said Josh.

A future forged together

For Louise, working at Allweld is about more than just perfecting her craft – it’s about being part of something bigger.

“There’s a real sense of purpose here,” she said.

“I’m proud to be part of a company that’s making a difference in people’s lives and in our community.”
