The Gabba
Our department is leading the coordination and planning of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games infrastructure program. The Gabba upgrade is one of 37 competition venues within the Brisbane 2032 Master Plan.
The Queensland Government will fund the $2.7 billion redevelopment of the Gabba.
The Gabba has hosted sport for more than a century and is home to cricket and AFL most weeks of the year. The stadium will be rebuilt to maintain our competitiveness for national international sport and entertainment events. All new and upgraded venue projects were pre-planned to meet the needs of our growing regions and brought forward to be built in time for the Games, not built for the Games.
The Gabba redevelopment will see:
- a new 50,000 seat stadium (depending on the event)
- hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic Athletics and Ceremonies
- a new pedestrian walkway linking to new Cross River Rail and Brisbane Metro
- a two-minute Cross River Rail access to Brisbane CBD.
Our infrastructure team will continue with finalising the Project Validation Report that includes the reference design. Bids into the market are expected to be in the second half of 2023. Construction is likely to take four years from 2026 and be ready for use by 2030.
