How to make applications under Right to Information and Information Privacy Acts

While we proactively release much information to the community about our activities, the Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) provides a formal means of requesting access to general information held by the department that is not normally publicly available.

The Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) provides a formal means of requesting access to, and amendment of, your personal information.

A formal application for access to government-held information under the RTI Act or IP Act should only be made as a last resort, where information is not otherwise accessible.

Application forms

You can apply for access to documents held by the Department by submitting an online RTI application form. If you are unable to use this online process, please contact one of our RTI officers by phone on (07) 3452 6949 or by email This email address is being protected from spambots. You can apply to amend personal information held by the Department that you believe is inaccurate, misleading, out of date or incomplete by submitting the approved Personal Information Amendment application form.

Fees and charges

An application fee is payable to make an application under the RTI Act This fee cannot be waived.

In addition to the RTI application fee, you may be charged for:

  • processing (if your application takes longer than five hours to process)
  • access to documents if access is given by provision of photocopies (no access charges are payable if documents are provided electronically).

There is no application fee or processing charges for applications made under the IP Act. You may be charged for access to documents if access is given by provision of photocopies (no access charges are payable if documents are provided electronically).

How long will it take to process my application?

A formal application is generally processed within 25 business days, but this period can be extended in some circumstances.

Administrative release

In certain cases, it may be possible for the Department to release documents administratively (that is, outside of a formal statutory process such as under the RTI or IP Acts).

If you make a formal request under the RTI or IP Act that the Department determines could be satisfied by administrative release, you may be referred to this process instead.
