We are supporting ‘hackerspaces’—informal places where people meet to share their interest in technology, tinker with tools, work on individual or shared projects, and learn from one another—through the Queensland Hackerspaces Grant program.
The grants will fund new and existing hackerspaces and support the continued expansion of the state's burgeoning advanced manufacturing sector. We are also encouraging industry to use hackerspaces to solve problems, source potential talent, and increase the involvement of community members, especially young people, in knowledge sharing and peer learning through participation in technological innovation.
The establishment and expansion of Hacker/Maker spaces is an important initiative within the Queensland Advanced Manufacturing 10-Year Roadmap and Action Plan, released in December 2016.
The Queensland Hackerspaces Grant program will provide $450,000 over two years to support the establishment of new hackerspaces and support the expansion of existing Queensland hackerspaces. Establishment grants of $20,000 and Expansion grants of $10,000 will be available to eligible applicants.
Groups looking to establish a hackerspace, or already established hackerspaces looking to expand, are invited to submit an application for the Queensland Hackerspaces Grant program.
