The South East Queensland South (SEQ South) region comprises the local government areas of Gold Coast, Logan and Redland.
The regional economy has a highly diversified industrial structure with employment opportunities and economic activity driven across several industries, most notably services-based sectors such as health care, education, retail and transport, as well as traditional drivers such as construction and manufacturing. The region also has a significant tourism industry.
The region's pristine North Stradbroke Island also offers a diversity of environmental and cultural tourism opportunities. With sand mining on North Stradbroke Island ending by 2019, the Queensland Government is implementing an economic transition strategy to expand the island's existing industries and ensure its stability for future generations.
Another key task for the region over the short-term is to sustain the momentum for increased economic activity generated by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, through international trade and investment. The event is expected to leave a lasting legacy for business, industry, sporting and community groups in Queensland. The athletes' village is one of the most significant legacy projects that will become part of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. The precinct is Asia-Pacific's emerging health and innovation hub, supported by $5 billion in infrastructure. It is projected to inject $2.9 billion annually into the local economy and employ up to 26,000 people.
