Industry feedback leads to free online resource for METS sector

The Queensland Government, in partnership with METS Ignited, has delivered the Test Mine facilities database. This interactive GIS database helps industry to identify potential options for testing and commercialising new products and services for the mining sector.

When METS Ignited consultated with the METS sector, it highlighted a lack of access to appropriate testing facilities. This is seen as a barrier to commercialising innovative goods and services in the sector. This feedback supports findings in the Austmine survey conducted in 2015.

In response, METS Ignited and the Queensland Government commissioned AECOM to map all available mine and laboratory testing facilities in Australia. The data has been integrated into an online mapping GIS system that enables users to identify testing options across Australia and indeed across the world. METS companies, researchers and miners can use the free tool to search for the most appropriate test sites for their project.

The result is the Test Mine facilities database, which aims to fast-track innovation, reduce the risk associated with investment and improve collaboration to strengthen Queensland's METS and mining ecosystem.

The Queensland mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector employs approximately 20,000 people in over 800 companies across Queensland. This busy sector generates $7 billion in revenue, adding $2.5 billion to the Queensland economy. As global demand for commodities increases, Queensland's METS sector is ready to capitalise on its potential for growth.

The Queensland Government has invested $7 million in initiatives to build on Queensland's competitive advantages. A number of these initiatives are being undertaken in partnership with METS Ignited, a $20 million Industry Growth Centre, headquartered in Queensland.
