After extensive consultation with local structural steel contractors, Managing Contractor for the North Queensland Stadium project, Watpac, is dividing major structural steel trade packages into several smaller packages to ensure local businesses have the capacity to tender for the work.
Watpac has been meeting with local structural steel contractors for several months and their feedback is being considered as the scope of the structural steel packages is reviewed.
During the construction of the Stadium approximately 3800 tonnes of structural steel will be installed on the project. This is equivalent in weight to approximately 3800 fully grown male salt water crocodiles!
It is anticipated the first structural steel package will be tendered and let before the end of 2017. The remaining packages will be progressively tendered and let subsequently.
Local businesses are also being supported to better position themselves to win work through the Queensland Government’s Strengthening Queensland initiatives.
