Project LAND 400

The Department of Defence’s LAND 400 project is managing the delivery of the next generation of armoured fighting vehicles for the Australian Army. Estimated by the Australian Government to have a total acquisition cost of between $14 and $20 billion, the LAND 400 project is expected to deliver 611 military vehicles over 15 years. Additionally, the vehicles will require maintenance and support for up to 30 years. LAND 400 is the biggest and most expensive acquisition project in the history of the Australian Army.

LAND 400 Phase 2

Phase 2 of the LAND 400 project is managing the acquisition of 211 combat reconnaissance vehicles and 12 additional modules. The Australian Government announced Rheinmetall Defence Australia as the preferred tenderer on 14 March 2018 with the Boxer combat reconnaissance vehicle. The total acquisition cost of the vehicles is $5.2 billion.

LAND 400 Phase 3

Phase 3 of the LAND 400 project will manage the acquisition of 383 infantry fighting vehicles and 17 manoeuvre support vehicles. The total acquisition cost of the vehicles is estimated to be worth approximately $10-$15 billion. It is expected that in Q3 2019 the Department of Defence will shortlist two tenderers. The shortlisted vehicles will undergo a rigorous testing and evaluation process. The selection of the preferred tenderer is not expected until 2022.
