The Gold Coast leads the region's economic growth with major infrastructure development, retail, health, education and tourism. It is hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2018, with the athletes' village to be one of the most significant legacy projects. Logan and Redland cities are well connected to the Gold Coast, Brisbane and regional Queensland, and are hubs of industry, health, education, retail and small business, delivering strong population and economic growth.
The region's pristine North Stradbroke Island also offers a diversity of environmental and cultural tourism opportunities. With legislation in place to substantially end sand mining on the island by 2019, the department is leading the implementation of a transition strategy to expand the island's existing industries and ensure its stability for future generations.
