This is one of Australia's most naturally beautiful and resource-rich regions, with the Great Barrier Reef, Whitsunday Islands, and the Bowen and Galilee basins, the largest coal mining deposits in Australia. The region is also the principal services support centre for the mining and resources sector in Central Queensland, providing specialist industrial, transport and supply chain services. Agriculture, tourism, horticulture, aquaculture, mining, manufacturing and construction are the major sectors.
We are creating jobs and strengthening the economy in this region through a range of activities including:

Services and support for local business
Our Mackay Isaac Whitsunday Regional Office (MIWRO) is committed to helping local businesses identify project opportunities and building their tendering and supply chain capability, so they can be competitive when tendering for work associated with regional projects.
Strengthening Mackay Isaac Whitsunday is a targeted suite of activities that help local businesses improve their capability to compete for this work.
Local content activities in Mackay Isaac Whitsunday include workshops, mentoring services and industry briefings supporting businesses at all stages of project supply chains, including sub-contracting and supplier arrangements.
These activities demonstrate our ongoing commitment to ensuring local businesses are provided with full, fair and reasonable opportunities to participate in government and non-government projects across Queensland.
They are part of how we are delivering on the Queensland Government's vision to strengthen the economy, create jobs and grow the region.
Major project supply chain activities
We are focussed on supply chain activities for major regional projects including:
Byerwen Coal Project
Byerwen Coal was granted mining leases for the Byerwen Coal Project in May 2017 and Byerwen Joint Venture has approved construction of the project.
Stage one construction and early works is expected to create approximately 100 jobs while the project’s operational workforce is anticipated to be about 300. Prime contractors have been appointed for the project.
QCoal Group is committed to maximising local content outcomes and is working with us to ensure regional businesses are involved in the project.
A number of future supplier events and activities will be hosted to promote available opportunities.

Carmichael Mine and Rail Project
Once complete, the $22 billion Carmichael coal mine and rail project will be Australia's largest coal mine with the capacity to produce up to 60MTPA at full production.
Construction and operation of the mine will provide significant regional employment opportunities, with thousands of direct and indirect jobs expected to be created.
Our MIWRO is working with Adani to maximise opportunities for the regional supply chain for competent, capable and competitive businesses.
Adani is currently working to identify opportunities for supply. This information will be used by the department to plan and conduct targeted activities connecting suppliers to buyers as part of the company’s commitment to Local Content.
Mackay Ring Road Project
Tenders for the main construction contract of the Mackay Ring Road closed in May 2017. CPB Contractors were announced as successful tenderers for Stage 1 of the project in August 2017. Construction is anticipated to start later this year.
The Mackay Ring Road Supply Chain Development Program is being jointly undertaken by DSD and the Department of Transport and Main Road’s project team to maximise opportunities for local employment. The program includes providing key information and skills development initiatives to support and help regional businesses be better positioned to win work on the project.
