Etheridge Shire Council has withdrawn this product from funding
This project was to acquire a mobile tyre shredding plant to be used by all nine local governments in the North West Queensland and Gulf region. The disposal of waste tyres is a growing problem for regional councils in the North West and Gulf. Environmental protection regulations prohibit local governments from burning or using other cheap methods of disposing of tyres. Tyre recycling and disposal services are not available in the North West and the cost of transporting waste tyres the thousands of kilometres to coastal services cannot be covered by available waste disposal funds. The only viable option to efficiently dispose of these tyres, while complying with environmental requirements, is for a shared asset to be acquired for regional benefit. Shredded tyres, unlike whole waste tyres, are a valuable commodity and can be re-used as a surfacing material for roads and sporting infrastructure.
