This project will enable Mount Isa's sewage treatment plant to meet its environmental licence conditions and to produce Class A effluent by improving its processes for removing pollutants from wastewater. It is Stage 2A of a three-stage initiative to reduce the city's reliance on fresh water for a range of uses including landscaping and beautification projects, suppressing dust from construction projects, and other community uses. This reduced demand will help to ease pressure on the water supply system during natural disasters improving community resilience and industry sustainability. Mount Isa's primary water source, Lake Moondarra, is prone to drought conditions and historically reaches critical levels on a three-year cycle. The secondary source, Lake Julius, is shared with Cloncurry and is experiencing increasing resource industry demands.
