Georgetown's new 3mL water reservoir will meet legislative requirements for capacity, plus current and future demands of the growth expected from potential irrigation and energy projects in the region.
Total project cost
* Average number of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs supported by project construction (based on Queensland Treasury's Guidelines for estimating FTE jobs directly supported by the capital works program).
Without Building our Regions funding, council would have had to delay replacing the 600kL reservoir which does not meet current demands.
To meet legislative requirements, the reservoir needs to hold 1½ times the daily average consumption, or best practice states around 2½ times, which would require a reservoir of 2.37mL.
Council says fabricating and constructing the reservoir will support three ongoing jobs.
Eliminating current storage issues will assist in the future growth that is earmarked for the towns and shire, including the Gilbert River and Strathmore agricultural projects.
A reliable water supply will cement the town’s position on the ‘grey nomads’ inland circuit—particularly southern tourists who visit during winter—and push up tourist numbers from the current 13,000 per year, bringing more dollars into the town.
Efficiently receiving, storing and delivering potable water to meet the requirements outlined in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines will give residents peace of mind, particularly during extended drought or other natural disasters.
Preparing now for growth means the community can plan with confidence for the future.
Improved erosion and sediment control.
Council's drinking water management plan and continued work with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection will ensure water standards are met for a safe and reliable supply.
